Identity & Purpose Guide
“You're not just quitting something — you're becoming someone new.”
About
Lena Torres is Bettor Health's Identity & Purpose Guide. She holds a Master's degree in Counseling Psychology and is a certified professional recovery coach with five years of frontline experience working alongside individuals stuck in the identity gap of later-stage recovery — free from compulsion but unsure who they were without it. Her training spans narrative therapy, values-clarification techniques, acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), and positive psychology. Her purpose-clarification framework is used by recovery coaches and counselors at multiple treatment and continuing-care programs, and she has contributed to counselor training curricula on post-acute recovery challenges. Lena's programs at Bettor Health are built on the conviction that lasting recovery requires not just removing a destructive behavior, but actively constructing a life worth staying present for.
How They Got Here
Lena spent five years as a recovery coach and group facilitator at a behavioral health center, working primarily with individuals in the later stages of recovery who felt stuck — sober or free from their compulsion, but uncertain about who they were without it. She saw this identity gap as one of the most underaddressed barriers to lasting recovery, and built a structured coaching practice around helping people construct a positive identity that pulls them forward rather than simply away from harm.
Training & Credentials
Lena holds a Master's degree in Counseling Psychology and is a certified professional recovery coach. She is trained in narrative therapy, values-clarification techniques, and acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) — particularly the psychological flexibility and committed action components that address identity and purpose. She has completed additional coursework in positive psychology and the science of meaning-making.
Recognition & Impact
Lena has presented her identity-focused recovery framework at behavioral health conferences and has contributed to counselor training curricula on addressing post-acute recovery challenges. Her purpose-clarification exercises are used by recovery coaches and counselors at several treatment and continuing-care programs. At Bettor Health, she leads all identity, values, and self-worth programs.
Their Commitment
Lena is clear that her programs do not replace clinical counseling and consistently refers participants with deep trauma, grief, or mental health symptoms to licensed therapists. She teaches identity work as a complement to professional care, and grounds every exercise she provides in evidence from counseling psychology and positive psychology research.
